Let’s get physical.

Happy Monday! It’s been a busy week this week, travelling around for various auditions, but hopefully a very productive one. (Let’s keep our fingers crossed!)

The main point of my blog this week is all about tackling fitness. Fitness and staying healthy is such an important factor these days. I feel like more than ever people are focused on fitness in their everyday lives and even as their careers. It is very important that eating well and keeping fit is introduced into your life at a young age, especially with the rise of childhood obesity being at its highest. I’m currently on a bit of a fitness bandwagon at the moment and I thought I would tell you more about it.

As a child I was one of the skinny whippet ones. I never seemed to gain weight and believe me, I had a very healthy appetite! It wasn’t until I was much older that I started to notice a change in my body. Gaining weight became much more apparent and I could definitely notice a difference. I have been lucky in my lifetime that I have never been branded as overweight and that I have always managed to keep my frame to a healthy size that I feel comfortable in. However, now I feel like I could lose a bit of weight and tone up considerably to give myself an extra boost mentally and physically.

For Lent this year my boyfriend and I decided to give up alcohol. I find that alcohol is a massive demon for weight gain as you can quite easily sit and binge drink in the calories. You may be thinking, “It’s fine because I’m not consuming a massive McDonalds meal!” But in fact, alcohol calories really do rack up. I am a massive wine fan and could quite easily drink a bottle of wine in no time. A standard bottle of wine contains an average of  625 calories. That’s an awful lot of calories! This is more than the average suggestion for your calorie intake at lunch time! Giving up alcohol for Lent has actually put an awful lot into perspective for me. Not only do I feel more alert and energised, but I have also saved an ample amount by not spending money on alcohol. Especially when you live in London – you know how expensive drinks are. After completing this Lent challenge, I’m obviously not going to give up alcohol forever, however I will definitely cut down on my intake. Not only for money reasons, but definitely for my health. As a Diabetic this is also a massive help for controlling my blood sugar levels.

I am an avid attendee of the gym and I try to stick to a routine of 3 times a week. Sometimes, as an Actor this can be difficult as I don’t know where I am going to be working and for how long at a time, so I fit the gym in as best as I can when I have weeks like that. At the gym I tend to stick to a basic routine and every week I add in something new. I do a mixture of cardio and weights and include an ab exercise routine. Within the weights section of my workout I use the various machines the gym has on offer as I find they are really effective. I do find that people who are new to the gym tend to stay clear of the machines as they are unsure of how to use them. Don’t be afraid to look like a novice! If you are unsure, there should always be a member of staff or a Personal Trainer wandering around who you can ask to give you a demonstration. By not gaining the information you need, you could be missing out on a potentially very beneficial exercise for your body! If you’re worried about going to the gym on your own, get one of your friends to go with you. It’s always nice to have someone to workout with and help push you and encourage you to achieve your goals.

Now, as well as attending the gym I have been trying to eat as healthily as possible. I am cutting down my portion sizes and really thinking about what I am consuming. To help me with this journey, I have been using the My Fitness Pal app. The app was recommeded to my boyfriend by one of his work colleagues who is also a Personal Trainer. The app is brilliant and really easy to use. When you start up the app you can choose what your main goal is, so for example you might choose weight loss. You then enter your current weight and your target weight. The app then tailors an appropriate amount of calories for you to reach (and not exceed) every day which will aid you in healthily losing the weight gradually to achieve your goal target. The app also gives you all the nutritional information for what you are eating and has a scanner tool which allows you to scan the barcode on packets so you get the exact product you have consumed. The nutritional information is extremely helpful not only for weight loss purposes but for my Diabetes control! I can work out exactly the amount of carbohydrates I am consuming, allowing me to get my injection amount spot on every time. Brilliant! If you’re interested in using the My Fitness Pal app, you can download it easily on your phone from the App Store, or alternatively you can find out more on their website – https://www.myfitnesspal.com

As well as being active at the gym, dance is also a big part of my life. I’m lucky enough to have a dance company called Blue Sky Dance that run classes just  a 10 minute walk from my house in Croydon, every Tuesday evening. They are currently on a break for Easter right now, but classes will resume on Tuesday 18th April and I can’t wait to get back to it! The classes are for adults and they focus on Beginners Jazz, Intermediate Jazz and Intermediate/Advanced Contemporary. They are a great price too with one class for £6 or two classes for £10! Bargain for living close to London in my opinion! If you want to know more, check out their Facebook page – https://www.facebook.com/blueskydance/?ref=ts&fref=ts

As a big lover of dance I was lucky enough to attend Move It/ Move Fit at the London Excel last month with my lovely friend Leanne.

We actually won tickets through an Instagram competition that Leanne entered through JD Sports. We went on the last day of the event and got to see loads of perfomances, stalls and classes which were dotted around. We took part in a very high energy fitness class called Bounce. I have done something very similar to this before and we had a whale of a time! The class consisted of you having your own mini trampoline which you continually Bounce up and down on throughout. The class was lead by some brilliant ladies from Essex whose website you can check out here – https://bouncefitbody.com. It’s safe to say that we were definitely dripping with sweat by the end and by the look of the Bounce girls it gets you extremely fit! Overall, we had a great day there.

I actually want to give my lovely friend Leanne a massive shout out for her amazing weight loss journey! She has lost over two stone through Slimming World and she looks incredible. She is well on her way to becoming a Slimming World Consultant and has started her own blog which you can follow here – https://ginandslimmer.wordpress.com. Her journey has been inspiring and she managed to lose this weight in an impressive 20 weeks. If you have any interest in joining Slimming World and want to find out more, feel free to contact her through her blog for some insight and tips! Well done Leanne!

So, fingers crossed that this hard work and effort will pay off for me. I love taking on a new challenge and pushing myself to succeed. Let’s keep going!
